Sciences in China

Research master's and doctoral routes are the strongest value here: supervisors actively recruit international PhD students and scholarships are more plentiful than at bachelor level.

Why this field

What Sciences involves, and who it suits

The pure and applied sciences — physics, chemistry, mathematics, materials, environmental science — are where China's research master's and PhD routes offer the strongest value. Supervisors actively recruit international postgraduates, scholarships are more plentiful than at bachelor level, and the laboratories are well resourced. Bachelor's science is more often Chinese-taught and is a longer, language-heavy road. If your goal is research, come in at master's or PhD with a clear lab and supervisor in mind; that focus is what the funding and the admissions actually reward.

Where it leads

What the degree is actually for

Common next steps for graduates of this field in China and at home.

One thing to check before you commit. A supervisor who wants you is the single strongest lever for both admission and funding at this level. A generic application without a named lab reads as low intent. Identify the group you want to join and write to it specifically.
Questions students actually ask

Straight answers

Largely yes — much graduate science research runs in English, and supervisors regularly take international PhD students. Daily lab life still involves Chinese, so basic Mandarin helps.
More so than bachelor's. Research master's and PhD places often come with scholarships, and the CSC High Level Postgraduate route reserves quotas for priority disciplines.
The science-intensive institutions — USTC, Nanjing, Peking and the technical universities — lead in physics, chemistry and materials. Match the university to the specific lab, not the overall rank.
