City

The same degree costs four times more in one city than another

Tuition is set by the university, but the monthly bill is set by the city. Where you study changes your budget more than which university you pick.

❄

Cheapest — Harbin and Shenyang

1,200–2,200 CNY a month, and Harbin's engineering school competes with the coastal flagships. A stipend goes furthest here.

Read Harbin →
🏦

Most expensive — Shanghai

2,800–5,200 CNY a month, and no central heating in winter. The finance and biotech internships are the reason people accept it.

Widest choice — Beijing

Eight universities we cover, from Tsinghua to a university that exists specifically to teach Chinese to foreigners.

⚖

Best value — Xi'an

1,400–2,500 CNY a month with a top-tier electrical engineering school. The job market is the trade-off, not the teaching.

Funding

Three layers of money, and how they stack

Applicants usually only know about the first layer. The second and third are smaller but far less contested.

🏆

CSC — national

Tuition, accommodation, insurance and a monthly stipend. Type A through your embassy, Type B directly to a host university.

🏙

Provincial — municipal

Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong and six more run their own awards, usually 50–100% tuition.

University — institutional

Research — academy

ANSO and CAS-TWAS fellowships fund master's and PhD research outside the CSC system, often with fewer applicants.

The twelve-month timeline that works

12 months out

Decide level and field. Check whether you need HSK or IELTS, because that determines everything downstream.

10 months out

Shortlist two to four universities and one realistic fallback. Note each one's scholarship deadline, not its admissions deadline.

8 months out

Sit or book the language test, request references, and start notarising your diploma and transcripts.

6 months out

Submit scholarship and admission applications. For PhD, contact supervisors before you submit anything.

3 months out

Accept an offer, pay any deposit, and receive the admission letter with your JW201 or JW202 form.

6 weeks out

Visa application, physical examination, accommodation booking and airport pickup request.

FAQ

Quick answers

Not necessarily. A large and growing number of master's and PhD programmes are taught entirely in English, and English-medium bachelor's programmes exist in business, engineering and computer science. Programmes taught in Chinese typically ask for HSK 4 at bachelor level and HSK 5 at master's level. If your Chinese is at zero, a one-year language course before the degree is the most common route.
Tuition ranges from roughly 12,000 CNY per year for a language course to 45,000 CNY for an English-medium MBBS, with most master's programmes between 20,000 and 40,000 CNY. Living costs run from about 1,200 CNY per month in Harbin or Shenyang to 5,000 CNY in central Shanghai. A realistic self-funded budget is 40,000–90,000 CNY per year including accommodation, food and insurance.
A full CSC award covers tuition, on-campus accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance and a monthly stipend of 2,500 CNY (bachelor), 3,000 CNY (master) or 3,500 CNY (PhD). It does not cover international airfare in most programmes. In expensive cities the stipend covers food and transport but not much more, so many students top it up from savings or part-time work.
It depends more on your country quota and your target university than on your grades alone. Type A (embassy) routes are quota-limited per country; Type B (university) routes favour applicants who have already been accepted by a supervisor. A realistic applicant with a coherent study plan, relevant background and two strong references has a reasonable chance; a generic application rarely succeeds.
Part-time work and internships are permitted only with written approval from your university and the local exit-entry administration, and the work must relate to your studies. Teaching English informally without permission is a common and risky mistake — it can lead to fines or cancellation of your residence permit.
