Why students end up in Chengdu

Sichuan University is the anchor, and its West China School of Stomatology is the best dental school in China by a clear margin — a department that attracts international postgraduates specifically for it. Beyond dentistry, the university is strong in materials, polymer science and Chinese literature, and it is a large comprehensive institution with a correspondingly wide programme list.

Chengdu's other argument is cost and pace. It is the cheapest of the major western cities after Chongqing, the food and social culture is unusually accessible to foreigners, and the technology sector has grown fast enough that graduates now have local options in games, software and electronics.

After graduation

Work and industry

Games and software (Tencent's TiMEI studio and others), the electronics assembly and packaging sector, and a growing biotech presence. Salaries are lower than the coast, but the cost of living means a graduate salary stretches further here than almost anywhere else on this list.

Internships are not automatic. Work while studying requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Arrange placements through the university rather than informally.

Before you commit

The part brochures leave out

Sunlight is scarce — the city averages very few clear days a year, which affects some students more than the cold does. Winter is damp and unheated. Sichuanese is widely spoken and standard Mandarin less universal than in northern cities.

FAQ

Questions specific to Chengdu

It is the standout department, but not the only case. Materials, Chinese language and software are all reasonable, and the low cost of living makes the city attractive for self-funded students in any subject. For engineering outside software, Xi'an is stronger.
1,500–2,600 CNY per month realistically, assuming university accommodation. Rent is roughly half of Shanghai's and food is cheap even by Chinese standards.
It affects more people than they expect. If you are sensitive to grey weather, budget for it consciously — the city has very few clear days between October and March.
