Why students end up in Hangzhou

Zhejiang University is the whole academic story here, and it is a large one: comprehensive, consistently in the top tier for engineering, computer science, agriculture and medicine, and a major host for government scholarship students. Because there is effectively one destination, the decision is simpler than in Beijing or Shanghai — if Zhejiang covers your subject, the city question is already answered.

The city itself is smaller than Shanghai and easier to live in. Commutes are shorter, the metro is clean, and the cost base is a third lower. Alibaba, NetEase and the e-commerce ecosystem they spawned give the city a commercial personality that is unusually accessible to graduates who want to stay.

What a month costs in Hangzhou

One student, CNY. The total assumes university accommodation; the private-rent line is there because it is the number that changes the answer.

After graduation

Work and industry

Alibaba and its subsidiaries, NetEase, ByteDance's Hangzhou offices and Hikvision are the large employers. E-commerce operations and cross-border trade roles are numerous and more accessible to international graduates than pure engineering roles, which tend to require strong Mandarin.

Internships are not automatic. Work while studying requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Arrange placements through the university rather than informally.

Living

Climate, and getting there

SeasonTypical rangeWhat to expect
Spring (Mar–May)12–22°CMild and rainy. Pleasant between the rain.
Summer (Jun–Aug)28–38°CVery hot and humid, with the plum rain season first. Air conditioning is essential.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)15–25°CDry and clear. The reason people describe the city as liveable.
Winter (Dec–Feb)3–10°CDamp cold with no district heating, though milder than Shanghai.

Transport

Xiaoshan airport for regional and some international flights. Hangzhou East runs to Shanghai in 45 minutes and Nanjing in about an hour. The metro is extensive and cheap, and the public bike system is genuinely useful around the lake and university districts.

Before you commit

The part brochures leave out

Summer heat and humidity are severe, and winter is damp without heating. Rent is lower than Shanghai but rises sharply near West Lake and the main campus, so check which campus your programme is based on before signing anything.

FAQ

Questions specific to Hangzhou

No — Zhejiang University is the only one we cover, and it is a single, large institution with several campuses. Treat the city as a single-university choice and read that profile carefully rather than expecting a shortlist.
For software, e-commerce and digital marketing, yes. The ecosystem is large, and the cost of living makes a graduate salary go further than in Shanghai. Mandarin is required for most roles outside multinational teams.
Roughly 25–30% lower. The realistic monthly range is 2,000–3,600 CNY against 2,800–5,200 in Shanghai, with the gap concentrated in rent.
