University of Science and Technology of China is the whole story, and it is a research university first and a city second. USTC is one of the few Chinese institutions genuinely competitive at the frontier of basic science: physics, chemistry and mathematics sit alongside computer science, artificial intelligence and a deep engineering base. The city is the capital of Anhui, inland and inexpensive, and now the seat of a national science centre that pulls in quantum-information, semiconductor and AI laboratories.
The trade-off is exactly that research focus. Hefei is not a cosmopolitan place; daily life runs in Mandarin, the international community is small, and the university expects a great deal of its students. If your target is a frontier science or engineering subject, the environment is exceptional. If you want a city experience or a broad choice of programmes, it is the wrong location.
