Why students end up in Guangzhou

Sun Yat-sen is the comprehensive flagship with a serious medical school, South China University of Technology carries engineering, architecture and materials, and Jinan University is the one that matters most for international students: it is a university founded for the Chinese diaspora, with the highest proportion of overseas students in the country and a clinical medicine programme taught in English that has been running for decades.

Guangzhou's climate is the thing people underestimate. It is subtropical, not temperate: summer runs from April to October, and winter is short and mild. That suits some students and defeats others. The city's other advantage is proximity — Shenzhen is half an hour away by high-speed rail and Hong Kong is under an hour, which matters for internships, flights and weekend life.

Work and industry

Trade and supply chain are the local specialisms: the Canton Fair, cross-border e-commerce, and the import-export businesses built around them. There is a large and well-established overseas trading community, particularly from Africa and Southeast Asia, which makes the city easier to enter commercially than academically.

Internships are not automatic. Work while studying requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Arrange placements through the university rather than informally.

Living

Climate, and getting there

SeasonTypical rangeWhat to expect
Spring (Mar–May)18–28°CWarm and extremely humid. The hui nan tian damp period in March makes interiors wet; dehumidifiers sell out.
Summer (Jun–Sep)28–35°CLong, hot and wet, with typhoon season from July. Heavy rain is normal rather than exceptional.
Autumn (Oct–Nov)20–30°CShort, warm and drier. The most comfortable stretch of the year.
Winter (Dec–Feb)10–20°CMild, occasionally cold enough for a jacket. No heating anywhere, and none needed most years.

Transport

Baiyun airport is a major international hub with direct routes across Asia, Africa and Europe. Guangzhou South runs to Shenzhen in 30 minutes and to Hong Kong West Kowloon in under an hour. The metro is dense and cheap.

Before you commit

The part brochures leave out

The humidity is the real adjustment. Clothes, documents and electronics all suffer in the spring damp, and dormitories without dehumidifiers develop mould. Cantonese is the everyday language of the city; Mandarin works, but shopkeepers and landlords will default to Cantonese and not everyone switches.

FAQ

Questions specific to Guangzhou

The degree is issued by the Chinese university and recognised according to your own country's rules, which vary widely. Some medical councils require a licensing exam and additional clinical training. Check your national medical council's list before you commit, not after.
Yes, meaningfully. The realistic monthly range is 2,100–3,800 CNY against 2,800–5,200 in Shanghai. Rent is the main reason, and university dormitories are considerably cheaper than equivalent private accommodation.
No. Teaching, administration and national exams are in Mandarin or English. Cantonese helps socially and in small businesses, but it is not a requirement for study.
