Why students end up in Shenzhen

We cover one university here — Southern University of Science and Technology — and that scarcity is the point. Shenzhen is not a university town. It is an industrial and engineering city that built a research university recently, funded it heavily, and staffed it with overseas-trained faculty. Class sizes are small, undergraduates get into laboratories early, and a high proportion of teaching is in English.

If your plan is to study engineering and then work in China, Shenzhen offers something no other city does: the companies that would hire you are a metro ride away. Huawei, Tencent, DJI, BYD and the entire hardware supply chain that supports them are here. If your plan is a broad choice of programmes and a traditional campus, this is the wrong city and the profile pages will make that obvious.

What a month costs in Shenzhen

One student, CNY. The total assumes university accommodation; the private-rent line is there because it is the number that changes the answer.

After graduation

Work and industry

The highest density of technology employers in the country. Internships exist in real number, are usually paid, and are competitive. Two cautions: student-visa internships must be arranged and reported through the university, and the working culture is demanding even by Chinese standards.

Internships are not automatic. Work while studying requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Arrange placements through the university rather than informally.

Living

Climate, and getting there

SeasonTypical rangeWhat to expect
Spring (Mar–May)20–28°CWarm, humid and rainy. Occasional heavy downpours.
Summer (Jun–Sep)28–34°CLong, hot and humid, with typhoon season. Sea breezes make it slightly more bearable than Guangzhou.
Autumn (Oct–Nov)22–30°CWarm and comfortable, the best time of year.
Winter (Dec–Feb)12–22°CMild and short. A jacket is enough.

Transport

Bao'an airport has direct regional and some long-haul routes. Futian and Shenzhen North stations connect to Guangzhou in 30 minutes and Hong Kong West Kowloon in about 15. The metro is modern and covers the whole city; crossing from one district to another by road can take an hour in traffic.

Before you commit

The part brochures leave out

Programme choice is narrow. If your subject is not engineering, science or business, there may be no suitable programme here at all. Living costs are close to Guangzhou but rent is higher, and the city has almost no historic centre or traditional campus atmosphere.

Provincial scholarships for Guangdong

A tuition waiver does not change what a month costs. The Guangdong award reaches students at 2 universities we cover in Guangdong, and the monthly figures above are what it has to cover.

FAQ

Questions specific to Shenzhen

Only if that university is genuinely the right fit. Read the profile properly: cohort size, English-taught coverage at your level, and whether your specific subject is one of its strengths. If two of those three are wrong, look at Guangzhou instead.
Not casually. Part-time work requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Internships arranged through the university are the normal route and are what most students actually do.
Slightly. The realistic monthly range is 2,400–4,500 CNY against 2,100–3,800 in Guangzhou. The difference is almost entirely rent; food and transport are similar.
