Why students end up in Xiamen

Xiamen University is the reason the city is on this list: strong in economics and finance, marine and environmental science, chemistry and the humanities, and home to a campus that is genuinely famous in its own right. The university sits by the sea on the island, which shapes the whole experience.

Xiamen itself is a clean, liveable coastal city across the strait from Taiwan, more international than most interior cities and unusually pleasant to live in. The trade-off is cost: it is the most expensive of the eastern cities outside Shanghai, and a tourist economy pushes everyday prices up. The cross-strait location also gives the humanities and Southeast Asian studies a regional weight that few campuses can match.

After graduation

Work and industry

Cross-strait trade, electronics and hardware, tourism and logistics. Salaries are moderate and the international market is small; many graduates move to Shenzhen or Shanghai for work rather than staying on the island.

Internships are not automatic. Work while studying requires university approval and immigration reporting, and the permitted hours are limited. Arrange placements through the university rather than informally.

Before you commit

The part brochures leave out

Cost is above its inland neighbours — Xiamen sits between Hangzhou and Guangzhou on price. Summer typhoons disrupt travel for a few days each season. Tourist areas are priced for visitors, not students, so budget around the campus rather than the seafront.

FAQ

Questions specific to Xiamen

1,900–3,300 CNY per month, above Hefei or Nanjing but below Shanghai. The gap with the inland cities is almost entirely rent and eating out.
More than most — it is coastal, tourist-oriented and close to Taiwan, so English goes further in daily life than in Jinan or Hefei. Outside campus, though, Mandarin is still the language of the city.
Economics and finance, marine science and chemistry lead. The campus is a draw in itself, but check that your specific subject is actually strong here before committing.
